Powai residents witnessed a historic and emotional moment on 7 December 2025 with the naming ceremony of Shaheed Jawan Vijay Ramchandra Kokare Chowk. The event took place at 4:00 PM near Nihal Nursing Home on Hare Krishna Road, opposite IIT Main Gate, Powai. The ceremony was organized under the initiative of BJP Ward No. 122, honoring Vijay Kokare, an Indian Army personnel who was martyred in Jammu and Kashmir while serving the nation.
Honouring a True Hero
Shaheed Vijay Ramchandra Kokare served in the Indian Army for four years and laid down his life in 2023 during his service. The chowk naming ensures that his courage, patriotism, and sacrifice remain permanently recognized in the Powai community. Residents and local leaders expressed that the initiative added historical and emotional significance to the area, serving as a reminder of the bravery of the nation’s soldiers.
Leadership and Community Participation
The naming ceremony was spearheaded by Srinivas Tripathi, ex-nominated corporator, with Mihir Koteja coordinating the process to ensure successful completion. Prominent local party members and organizers, including Bhaskar Dubey (Vikhroli West Mandal President), Vilas Sohani (Vikhroli West Mandal General Secretary), and Ram Surat Singh (Ward President – 122) played key roles in managing the event.
Residents Celebrate the Tribute
Citizens, residents, and community members attended the ceremony, expressing pride and gratitude for Vijay Kokare’s sacrifice. Ward leadership emphasized that the chowk would stand as a permanent symbol of valor, patriotism, and national pride, inspiring future generations to remember the heroism of Shaheed Vijay Kokare.
