Powai, Mumbai | Environment & Civic News:
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has directed the Maharashtra Forest Department to conduct a detailed investigation into the axing and transplantation of more than 100 fully grown trees at a private plot in Powai. The directive follows complaints from NatConnect Foundation and concerned Powai residents over large-scale tree removal that began on November 27, 2025.
Controversial Tree-Cutting at Shimmering Heights Plot
The incident occurred at CTS-9 near Shimmering Heights Society, where workers began cutting trees despite protests from locals. The site had previously received Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) approval in February 2024, which permitted cutting of 40 trees and transplantation of 70 trees.
Images and videos of the axing circulated widely on social media, triggering public outrage. Residents raised concerns about the loss of mature trees, which provide shade, improve air quality, support groundwater recharge, and serve as habitats for urban wildlife.
Ministry Directs Investigation
Responding to public concern, the MoEFCC issued a directive on December 2, instructing the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) to investigate and submit a detailed action-taken report. Amid growing protests and an online petition with over 1,500 signatures, tree-cutting operations were immediately halted.
Calls for Stronger Green Policies
Local residents and environmental groups have demanded a re-evaluation of Mumbai’s tree-clearance policies. They emphasized the ecological loss caused by removing mature trees and urged authorities to implement stronger safeguards to protect Powai and Chandivali’s fragile green cover.
This incident has once again highlighted the importance of urban forestry and sustainable development in rapidly expanding city areas like Powai, where green spaces are critical for environmental balance, air quality, and community well-being.
