Heavy rainfall that lashed Mumbai since Monday morning triggered a dangerous rockfall in Powai, damaging three parked cars near Shiv Bhagatani Manor building in Panchavati Complex on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred at around 2:41 PM. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Heavy Rains Trigger Hill Rockfall in Powai
According to residents, two large stones rolled down from a nearby hill following continuous rainfall, which loosened the soil and destabilised the hillside. The sudden rockfall caused panic in the area as the stones crashed onto parked vehicles.
The affected location falls under the jurisdiction of the MHADA authority. Officials reached the site immediately after receiving information and carried out emergency clearing operations to remove rocks and mud debris, preventing further risk to residents and property.
Multiple Rain-Related Incidents Reported Across Mumbai
The Powai rockfall was among several rain-related incidents reported across Mumbai city and suburbs on the same day. Civic authorities recorded nine incidents involving fallen trees, branches, and structural damage.
These included:
One tree-fall incident in the city area
Three incidents in the eastern suburbs
Three incidents in the western suburbs
In addition, partial house collapses were reported in both the city and western suburbs. Thankfully, no casualties were reported in any of these incidents.
Short Circuits Reported, Situation Under Control
Two incidents of electrical short circuits were also reported at different locations. Prompt action by the concerned authorities ensured that the situations were brought under control without major damage.
Authorities Urge Caution in Hilly Areas
The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of hillside structures in Powai during heavy rainfall. Authorities have urged residents living near hills and slopes to remain alert during intense downpours, as unstable soil and loose rocks pose a recurring threat during the monsoon season.
